December 2015 the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published the final rule on Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs). The new rule mandates the use of ELD’s as the new platform for keeping record of duty status in the United States. The new rule forces carriers to be using a current generation AOBRD device by December 18th 2017.

The ELD Mandate will benefit drivers in the following ways:

  • Fast automatic status changes - With eLogs duty status changes go from 15 minutes to real time.
  • More accurate logs – The device does all the math and provides the driver with simple information they can use to plan their day.
  • Cut down on paperwork – eLogs are automatically preparing the log data, drivers can save more time by not having to write out logs and inspection reports. Less time spent on paperwork means more time spent on the road.
  • Provide dispatch with real-time access to information to assist with planning.
  • Reduce and eliminate costly HOS violations.
  • Improve on-road safety.

Since the finalization of the rule, Wildwood Transport has been working on researching AOBRD/ELD solutions as well as planning and deploying the devices to our trucks. A switch from our current in-cab communication provider to PeopleNet was apart of this first step which took several months but was completed June 30th 2017.

The transition from paper RODS to PeopleNet eDriver Logs started at the beginning of August and will be continuing until all of our drivers have made the transition. We have also elected to transition Canada only drivers onto the PeopleNet eDriver Logs.
